Creativity Found In Vancouver

There are different venues to get your art exposed to the world. You can use some intangible mediums like the internet where you can reach tons of people from all over the world. But what if you wanted people to see your art not just through a computer monitor but in person? then you could look into something else, perhaps something like renting a gallery space  - a space where you can actually foster some human interaction through your art. Sound great, yes? Well, there’s just one tiny little problem. Gallery spaces are often pricyoverbooked  and in some cases full of – inglorious - commissions deducted from your sales.

Hmm. That doesn’t sound too appealing. What else could you do then?

You don’t have to think too hard because there are people out there that are already changing the game by allowing artists to showcase their work in a more budget friendly way – or the way I see it – in a more approachable way {especially if you are just starting out.} So, where are all of these game-changing projects? Well, here’s one of them {and this one’s close to home!}:

Introducing Nomad - a self referential Art collective which currently runs for one month at a time. One of the prevailing characteristic of the project is its “nomadic” spontaneity spawning out of the participation and support of art communities not limited to city, country or continent.

Johnny Yi – Co Founder of Nomad – explains:

Our shows function as a way to help artists get their work exposed. We started Nomad because of the scarcity of gallery space in Vancouver, not that we don’t have enough galleries in Vancouver – just that the wait list for these galleries are usually between a year to and year and a half.

This was our starting point where we started having meetings between about 20 artists planning ways to  showcase our work together. We reached an agreement that if we band enough artists together and collected $50 from each artist we might be able to rent a retail space for a month. And that’s how our nomadic concept was born, our idea of a gallery space funded by communal contribution. A gallery run by artists, for artists.

The first show was a great success. We pulled in about 1000 – 1500 visitors from the two openings we had combined. We are currently working with Rize Alliance at 196 Kingsway, Vancouver and our next opening will happen on the 12th of the August.

Johnny could’t have said it better “A gallery run by artist for artists” it just makes sense, doesn’t it? Add the support of the community and shazam! you got yourself a pretty interesting project.

So peeperonies, are you going to the show? Are you going to support the arts community of Vancouver? OH YES WE ARE!

Bring your whole creative possy. You’ll have gallons of nomadic fun and you’ll encourage other people to take a chance and change the game – just like Johnny and the other cool folks of Nomad are.

If you are not in Vancouver {oh, poor you} you can check out their website for any updates, who knows, one day they might go to your city.

For everybody else; spread the love and give them a blue thumb on Facebook. And for extra added awesome, here’s the flyer with info about the show:

Thanks for getting in touch, Johnny and the nomads!
