Have your heard of Project Space? No? Ok, here’s the low down: Project Space is a book shop, publisher, programming space, and studio based in the heart of Chinatown Vancouver. It’s a wonderful place where tons of creating things happen, from magazines to workshops. Now that you know what they’re all about – I’ll introduce you to Tracy, one of the founders of Project Space. Today she’s taking us for a ride around town so buckle up and enjoy. Take it away Tracy! [As per usual, the guest took the pictures with a disposable film camera given by The Artful Desperado - the results are a total surprise for both, the guest and the readers!]

Oh hey there!
Since I am in the process of putting together the Artful City Walks blog project, I thought this post would suit the mood. Today I’m going to share with you something fantastic – Dear Photograph - “digital nostalgia of the highest order”.
The project - created by 22 year old Taylor Jones – brings the past to the present. Such a simple yet powerful concept, yah? Just take an old picture and hold it in front of a digital camera and see the magic unfold. It’s almost as if all these happy memories came rushing in right when you snap the picture.
Taylor’s project has been so successful that he already has a book coming out! Wowza…talk about going viral and going strong. If you have some cool pics of the old days, you should give it a try and send your submission!
Tell me, do you know of other cool community projects happening? If you do, leave them on the comments below.

AAH! I am so excited today my friends. I am going to share with you a little project of mine that is about to take off. It involves art, bloggers and photography. Are you ready?
introducing: Artful City Walks
What is it?
A new blog series that will feature bloggers and artists from different cities – starting with Vancouver.
What’s so cool about it?
All these awesome bloggers and artists will receive a camera loaded with good ol’ film (camera sent by me) which they will take with them on their daily commute (cameras are small, so no biggy there). They will then snap pictures of places that inspire them – anything from coffee shops, galleries, parks, restaurants, etc.
After they have some fun with the cam, they’ll send it back and I’ll develop, scan and post their best shots here on the blog along with their best city tips – places to go and recharge your creative batteries.
So, is this like a city guide?
Yep! But with pictures and advice from real people, real awesome creative people like you!
And who’s organizing it?
Me!
When are The Artful City Walks going to start?
They’ll be launched in early Spring. I am currently contacting the potential participants to get the party started, so I am busting ma butt to iron out all details.
So now you know it – very, very soon you’ll have a new excuse to travel! (by traveling I mean you on your comfy couch reading the posts or, if you are more of a dare devil, take an actual airplane and go for a vacay!).
If you have any ideas for this project (or maybe some possible candidates) send them over to hello [at] theartfuldesperado.com
Woot woot, let the artful party begin! Hope you guys have an excellent start of the week.
Creative Feature – Photography By Indea

Hello artful desperados.
The weekend is upon us, and so is Halloween! Are you dressing up? If you are, what are you wearing? Do you need some inspiration? Yeah? My friend you are in luck today. This post serves as visual inspiration – not for Halloween – but rather for a fantastic photographic evening with friends over the weekend, capturing the romance of Fall. Why don’t you take your camera, sit back and enjoy the following “picterview” (pictures and interview, clever huh?) with Indea Vanmerlin - a self-taught film photographer.
Hello Indea! Welcome to the blog, get comfy and let’s get into creative business, shall we?
Who is Indea?
I think the only thing to say is that I’m changeable and all too aware that life is transient. I think that’s why I like photography so much. Because you can capture a moment so perfectly and clearly and somehow revisit yourself. It’s mysterious the power the past has over us and how much it can push us forwards or hold us back. Like a lot of the most significant things in life, photography happened so suddenly to me and without any reason. I didn’t consciously decide to express myself this way – it just appeared in my life and it feels like it’s always been here.
I don’t battle with creative blocks. I’ve learnt that trying to fight myself just doesn’t work! When I’m in a slump I just try to ride with it. My creativity reflects my emotional state. If I have to wait a few days before I’m ready to pick up my camera again, then so be it. I know that my creativity isn’t going anywhere. If anything, these ‘resting’ periods help me to redefine myself over and over again.
I love walking through forests and visiting gardens. Just being surrounded by nature replenishes my soul and makes me feel alive. If I’m feeling fragile I watch Studio Ghibli movies – the stories always make me smile.
Taking life too seriously. Sometimes I have to remind myself to just try and enjoy the moment.
Be patient with yourself – it’s easy to look at your work and think you’re not good enough, but learning to let yourself grow without criticism takes courage.
