Overgrowth by Parker Fitzgerald and Riley Messina
Oct

Overgrowth is a collaborative artistic project created by Parker Fitzgerald – the guy that takes most of the photos for Kinfolk magazine and Riley Messina – the gal that, if I’m not mistaken, did lots of the floral styling for this year’s Spring issue of Kinfolk, the one with the ice cream and flowers that made us go all gaga.
I’m totally going to be honest with you, I feel the concept of florals + faces is a wee overdone at this point, BUT the execution of this portraits (shot with film nonetheless) is beautiful. The floral design is just as awesome and works perfect with the models and the background. It’s whimsy (in the good sense) and somewhat creepy and dark at the same time – hence the feature on today’s post.
And even though it’s fall and there are hardly any wild flowers left, we can still enjoy a good ol’ session of floral design. In the face. Just the way we like it, right?
Paintings by Thomas Darnell

Whoa. I love ending the week with something outstanding, in this case the floral paintings of Thomas Darnell. Are you holding your jaw? Cause I am. There are lots of still-life floral paintings out there, but there’s something about these ones that really draws one’s attention. Maybe it’s the details, maybe it’s him, maybe it’s Maybelline – wait what? Sorry, got carried away. But seriously, the details! You can almost lean over and smell the roses.
Since I know you must be lusting over these paintings, then you should see Thomas’ full portfolio, it’s an artful floral smörgåsbord.
Well, on this happy, summery, rose-infused note, I say happy weekend friends! Enjoy it, wild and free!
secret garden by Enrico Nagel

I am in awe with these collage series titled Secret Garden by Enrico Nagel. First of all, the whole floral theme is very trendy right now so he gets extra points for that – but – by adding a few extra timeless elements like avant garde couture and solid colors – Enrico has managed to create strong modern art pieces that will remain beautiful, regardless of any trend.
I find similarities between Enrico’s work and Ashkan Hornarvar - who happens to be one of my favorite mixed media artists. I guess the list of favorites will just keep getting bigger and bigger!

Holy crapola! Inside my head there’s a standing ovation going nuts for this artist. Did you think this was a photo? I did! I was actually kinda curious as to how the photographer got the brush-like texture in her image. Turns out it’s oil on canvas! *plop* head just exploded.
Pakayla Biehn has taken us by surprise with her magical Double Exposure paintings. In this series, Pakayla combines two current trends: floral patterns and the rebirth of analog photography. No wonder why we all dropped our jaws, right?
For this post I added some of my favorites from her collection but please, don’t let this stop you from visiting her wonderful site which has many other amazing paintings.
Oh and if you like these type of work, you should definitely check out this post and this one – both filled with double exposure beauty.

Pascuala Lira - a Chilean artist that loves soft tones and uncomplicated subjects. She also loves creating beautiful paintings on wood pieces – also called Maderas – like the one above. Her art feels so homey, doesn’t it? It makes me want to sip mate and relax by the fire (yeah, it’s still winter in Vancouver).
