Unwoven Light by Soo Sunny Park

Unwoven light by Soo Sunny Park

Guys, I have a special treat for you today. Angela Walley from Walley Films is kind enough to send me updates of their latest projects, and let me tell ya, it’s always such a nice surprise to see her emails in my inbox. Today’s post is no exception.

They recently documented Soo Sunny Park‘s amazing installation Unwoven Light, which is currently on display at the Rice Gallery in Houston (you lucky Texans!).

Here’s a little description of this installation:

Soo Sunny Park’s installation Unwoven Light animates Rice Gallery’’s expansive space, transforming it into a shimmering world of light, shadow, and brilliant color. Suspended from the walls and ceiling, thirty-seven individually sculpted units are arranged as a graceful, twisting flow of abstract form. Entering the gallery there is no set path to follow. Instead, we are invited to meander slowly as one might stroll along a river’s edge, stopping to admire the glints of light that dance on the water’s surface.

I am swoon over this. So magical! The way Soo Sunny Park managed to put all the pieces together is stunning, it seriously looks as if she was able to trap light and turned it into mouldable sheets. Are you all over this?

Watch the video below (which by the way, it’s a Vimeo staff pick! Woop, congrats Walley Films) and get ready to feel all goosebumpy:

Matchstickmen by Wolfgang Stiller

Matchstickmen by Wolfgang Stiller

Matches never looked this good! I am seriously loving this installation by Wolfgang Stiller. He has taken a mundane object to new heights.

I’m still riding Monday’s boat of “art doesn’t always have to be controversial” – today’s post is another perfect example of this. In my opinion, Wolfgang’s sculptures don’t necessarily communicate a bold statement – rather, they’re just meant to be enjoyed “as is” – raw, simple, clever. I must say it’s a nice break to feature this kind of art, especially when life over here at the Desperado’s headquarters has been chaotic to say the least. A big life change and hunting for new projects has depleted my creative batteries. It’s all part of the process, right? And batteries can always be recharged. Thankfully, we have people like Wolfgang that let use see the hidden beauty in everyday life.

Now, I challenge you to make the matches in your bathroom look like the ones above. Ready? Start carving!

Styrofoam Cup Sculpture by Tara Donovan

Remember this other sculpture/installation by Tara Donovan? Well, this one is just off the charts! The materials used for it are usually a staple in offices, nothing really fancy – but Tara with her immense talent – has turned them into a stunning cloud of light. It’s like a shiny hive! Beautiful isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be amazing to have this in your office instead of those horrible fluorescent lights? Yeah, I feel yah!

Hundreds of thumbs and toes! A very colorful – and somewhat eerie – installation by Anbreen Butt. Kinda crazy how a cluster of objects can transform into something completely different no? In this case a cool optical illusion from afar and a finger-liking-good surprise from up close!

Be honest. Did you go a little bit insane from looking at this amazing installation by Tomas Saraceno? I know you did. And so did I friend. You’re not alone!

Tomas’ utopian vision of cities floating in the sky became a bit more real when he built this installation for the 2nd International Artist Airshow. Poetic Cosmos of the Breath was created with foil , a bunch of sandbags and the help of other – lucky – art lovers and artists. The whole thing was slowly inflated to create a solar dome that will shimmer and shine with the morning rays of light. It is definitely poetic and beautiful.

What a nice note to end the week no? Enjoy your weekend amigos!
